The Walsh Group, in collaboration with H.J. Russell, Phillips/May Corporation, and designer PGAL, embarked on a journey to transform airport terminal construction.
The project aimed to demolish and rebuild Terminal C’s High C Gates in a historic and innovative fashion, setting new standards for the industry.
Demolition of Terminal C’s gates 33, 35, 36, 37, and 39 began in February 2021.
However, what followed was a paradigm shift in terminal development.
The project involved constructing four new gates as six prefabricated modules at a remote site near the airfield.
These colossal modules, each weighing a staggering 900,000 pounds, featured steel frames, glass walls, concrete floors, insulated metal panels, and concrete roofs.
The incredible part?
After their completion, each module was transported approximately one mile across the airfield, navigated underneath the existing Skylink guideway, and finally assembled at Terminal C.
This method marked a historic first for U.S. airports, challenging traditional construction constraints.
The meticulous execution of this operation using self-propelled modular transporters during six overnight shutdown periods from August 26 to September 9 was nothing short of extraordinary.
The result was the birth of the new High C Gates, which opened to the public on June 1, 2022.
These gates offer a remarkable 30% more space compared to other DFW gates, prioritizing technology and sustainability.
